Under-bed storage: measure height at the lowest obstruction
Check rails, slats, center supports, floor transitions, and pull-out clearance before choosing a rigid box, soft bag, or rolling container.

Why this decision is easy to get wrong
Bed clearance is often measured at the visible side rail, but the lowest obstruction may be a center support, slat, bolt, fabric sag, or floor transition farther underneath.
A container also needs a route in and out. Wall spacing, a rug edge, bedside furniture, and the amount of lift in a soft bag can all reduce usable size.
Measurements to take
- Lowest vertical clearance across the entire intended path
- Clear width between legs and supports
- Usable depth from each accessible side
- Rug or threshold height
- Pull-out distance available in the room
- Container handle or wheel projection
What to compare
Rigid boxes
Predictable shape and stacking, but little tolerance for a low bolt or uneven floor.
Soft bags
Flexible around minor constraints, but can bulge and become difficult to pull when overfilled.
Rolling containers
Reduce dragging effort on suitable floors, but wheels consume height and may catch on rug edges.
Access side
A container is not useful if furniture or a wall prevents it from being fully withdrawn.
A practical method
- Use a flashlight and inspect the full underside before measuring.
- Measure height at the sides, center support, slats, hardware, and any sagging material.
- Map leg and brace positions from the accessible edge.
- Measure the floor area required to pull the container out completely.
- Choose contents by access frequency and weight; avoid creating a container too heavy to handle.
- Leave clearance rather than matching the lowest height exactly.
Fit check
More likely to fit the brief
- A low-profile container with clearance under every support
- A soft bag for lightweight textiles where flexibility helps
- A rolling format on a suitable smooth path with room to pull it out
Reason to pause
- A box matched only to side-rail height
- A container longer than the room’s pull-out space
- A bag packed until it bulges above the lowest obstruction

- Do not alter bed supports or structural hardware to create storage space.
- Keep manufacturer-required clearances, vents, electrical items, and moving mechanisms unobstructed.
